Shriners International First Lady Charlene McGuire
Charlene McGuireFirst Lady Charlene McGuire is the wife of the late Terry McGuire, who was slated to become the 2009-2010 Imperial Potentate of Shriners International, a fraternity of approximately 360,000 members in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Republic of Panama. Although her husband passed away earlier this year, she will assume the role of First Lady during this Imperial Year.

The youngest of seven children, First Lady Charlene was born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised on dairy farms in Charlotte and Von Ormy, Texas. After graduating from Somerset High School, she worked at USAA, and later attended Texas A & I University, now Texas A& M University, in Kingsville, Texas, where she majored in elementary education. It was there that she met Terry, and they married after his graduation in 1957.

The couple lived in Somerset, Texas, and eventually settled in San Antonio. While Terry taught school and earned his master’s degree, First Lady Charlene was a substitute teacher and returned to college to continue work on her undergraduate degree. After the birth of their two children, Janice and Patrick, First Lady Charlene became involved in her children’s activities and was a devoted volunteer in the Parent Teacher Association at their school.

She later had a career as a real estate agent and was part owner of a San Antonio women’s clothing store, Ann’s Boutique, for 10 years.

First Lady Charlene is a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and the Daughters of the Nile. She was previously a member of the Harp and Shamrock Society. In addition, she has been a long-time member of the Oxford United Methodist Church in San Antonio, where she has served on a number of committees. She is also a member of the United Methodist Women and an active volunteer for several of the group’s community and charitable efforts.

In addition to her two children, First Lady Charlene has four grandchildren.

First Lady Charlene’s fundraising program, “Giving the Gift of Hope, Life and Dreams,” will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children’s emergency transportation fund for burn patients. The fund covers the transportation costs for burn patients throughout North America who need treatment at one of the Shriners Hospitals for Children specializing in burn care.
