The fall season ushers in cooler temperatures, the changing of the leaves and a season full of holiday activities and food.
Shriners Hospitals for Children would like offer tips to make your Halloween holiday safe and full of fun.
Home Safety
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Make sure your porch is well-lit and free of debris.
- Restrain your pets so they dont bite or scare trick-or-treaters.
Halloween Costumes
- Choose or plan costumes that are bright and reflective; add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags so they are easier to spot in the dark.
- Make sure costumes are flame resistantyou can usually find this information on the costume's label or packaging.
- When possible, opt for nontoxic makeup and accessories, as masks can limit your vision.
- If a child is carrying a toy sword or stick, make sure it has a blunt tip and is not too long. A sharp object can hurt a child if he or she stumbles or falls.
Tips for Treats
- Children should never open or eat any treats before going home. An adult should inspect all treats.
- Trick-or-treaters should only visit houses of those they know and where the porch light is on.
- Discard any candy that is homemade, not commercially wrapped, or not wrapped at all. Inspect wrapped candy for signs of tampering or pinholes. Discard anything that looks suspicious.
- If you have small children, discard any items that pose a choking hazard such as nuts, gum, hard candy or small toys.
Travel Safety
- Children should always trick-or-treat with an adult or a buddy, never alone.
- Trick-or-treaters should use sidewalks and keep to well-lit streets.
- Children should never go into a strangers home or car for treats.
- In case of emergency, trick-or-treaters should carry a cellphone.
- Trick-or-treaters should carry a flashlight with fresh batteries.
- If a child is old enough to trick-or-treat without a guardian, ask him or her to establish a route in advance and share it with you.
