Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that occurs when the central nervous system does not properly form during the first month of pregnancy. An estimated 70,000 people in the United States are currently living with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Disabilities vary widely from one child to another, but most children experience lower extremity weakness and orthopedic problems which will require surgeries or bracing. They may also have bowel and bladder problems. These problems cause continence issues and can leave their kidneys at risk. Finally, most children born with open neural tube defects have abnormalities in the development of the brain requiring placement of a shunt to aid in the circulation of cerebral spinal fluid.
