Because of increasing flu activity in our community and the risk of transmission from visitors to patients and staff, hospital visitor restrictions are in effect as of Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago is following many preventive measures as recommended by the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) to reduce the spread of influenza. These restrictions are intended to protect the health of our patients, their families and our staff.

The H1N1 flu is different from the regular flu because it targets young people. People can be contagious with an illness before they show signs or symptoms of being sick.

Restrictions include the following:
  • Until further notice, visitors and volunteers under the age of 18 are not permitted in the hospital.
  • Only patients and children seeking evaluation or treatment should be brought to the hospital.
  • Patients in public waiting areas must be supervised at all times. When not in a patient room, we ask that patients and families stay in the cafeteria and mall areas of the hospital.
Visitors with the following symptoms may not enter the hospital:
  • A fever above 100° F and a sore throat or cough.
  • Persons who have recently been ill (as above) should not visit unless they have been symptom free for at least 24 hours.
  • Persons from households where others are ill (as above) should be alerted to watch for signs of illness in themselves. If they become ill, they should leave promptly.
All tours, school groups, and special events are canceled during this time.

If you have any questions please call or e-mail Director of Performance Improvement Terri Aiello at (773) 385-5825 or taiello@shrinenet.org during business hours (M-F 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.), or call the charge nurse after hours: (773) 622-5400.
