As a volunteer at our hospital, you can assist staff and patients in many ways. Some volunteers work directly with patients while others provide support service by working “behind the scenes.” Every volunteer position is important and provides a genuine service to our hospital and patients.
What are some of the benefits of volunteering?
- An opportunity to provide support to patients and their families in an effort to make their hospital experience more pleasant.
- Experience working with kids and families from diverse cultures.
- A sense of achievement and motivation that is ultimately generated from your desire and enthusiasm to help others.
- Working in an environment that fosters creativity and independence.
- Exposure to the hospital environment.
- Flexible hours.
Volunteer placement is primarily based on the needs of our hospital, the kind of work you wish to do, and the times you are available. Your interests and talents will be carefully matched with the needs of the hospital. We do this so that your expectations will be met and your volunteer experience will be meaningful.
If you are at least 18 years of age and wish to donate your time and special skills to help children through their hospitalization, you may apply to join the ranks of our outstanding volunteers. We ask that you commit to a minimum of 3-5 hours per month. The application process is thorough. We complete background reports on all prospective volunteers which include checking references, criminal records, and child abuse histories. Tuberculosis tests, proof of immunity to certain diseases, and a drug test performed at a laboratory chosen by Shriners Hospital for Children will also be required. Further, a comprehensive orientation program must be completed prior to volunteering.
Working together, volunteers and staff provide the excellent care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you would like to apply, click here for our volunteer application.
